At 14 months, your toddler will be given a vaccination that protects him or her against meningococcal disease.
This disease leads to meningitis, blood poisoning or pneumonia. Meningococcal disease is caused by different types of meningococcal bacteria.
Through the National Immunisation Programme, children have been vaccinated against meningococcal type C since 2002. Because the number of Meningococcal type W cases is increasing in the last three years, a broader protecting vaccine is now being introduced. From 1 May 2018, toddlers aged 14 months will receive a vaccination that protects against meningococci types A, C, W and Y. This vaccine is already recommended for travelers for many years, and is also used in immunisation programs in various countries. Experience and research show that the vaccine is safe and offers good protection.
